Start your month off right with an evening of music by Rebirth Events at Vern’s Pub (622 8 Ave. SW)! On Wednesday, August 1, see Quebec’s Slaughter Slashing alongside Calgary acts The Myconid – an electronica, metal and punk hybrid – Netheriel, Leave the Living, and Dead Salvation. Tickets are $8 at the door; event starts around 8 p.m. Two nights later (on Friday, August 3), Vern’s will host A War Within, Caught Off Guard and the Conniving Cadavers.
Another event from Rebirth, whose schedule is utterly packed and somewhat insane. To be exact, the group organized 37 shows in the 2011/2012 calendar year and will spend Sunday, August 5 celebrating their first anniversary with a show at the New Black (919 9 Ave. SE). The evening will feature Empty Visionaries, To Take A Life, The Man and his Machine, Abstract Asylum and World Class White Trash. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
Head down to the New Black on Wednesday, August 8 to support the Toronto label Feast or Famine Recordings. Label act Exalt from Ontario – touring on the April released Breach False Minds – will be performing with Slumlord (Edmonton), A Past Unknown (Cedar Falls) and Calgary acts To Take A Life and Contender. Show starts around 6:30 p.m.
The Distillery (615 7 Ave. SW) will host a star-studded evening on Thursday, August 9 when Kill Devil Hill (featuring members of Pantera, Black Sabbath & Alice in Chains) performs. Opening will be Vancouver thrash machines Titans Eve, alongside Calgary acts EnemyUs and Throne of Vengeance.
Calgary’s classic metal act Kobra And The Lotus will release their self-titled sophomore record on August via Spinefarm/Co-Op on August Friday, August 10 while on tour in Europe. The band will play Wacken Open Air on August 3, Bloodstock Open Air on August 12, and London on August 13. Kobra And The Lotus will be available via iTunes and Amazon. Also recently released was the debut full-length by Calgary’s enigmatic black metallers Ye Goat-Herd Gods. Becoming Flesh is now available via iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby, or directly from the band through Facebook.
New band! Head down to Lord Nelson’s Bar & Grill (1020 8 Ave. SW) on Friday, August 10 for an evening of blistering extreme metal featuring Calgary acts Kyoktys and Super Massive Black Holes. Also performing will be new band Doberman, a side project comprised of members from Kataplexis, Breathe Knives, Nosis and the Fallacy. Vancouver’s Abriosis will round out the bill. Tickets are $10 at the door and show starts at 10 p.m.
On Wednesday, August 29, SAIT’s the Gateway will host UK’s Architects with A Sight for Sewn Eyes and Structures. This will be an all ages event. Tickets are $15 at Ticketmaster or $20 at the door.
Lastly, head down to the Distillery on Friday, August 31 for the Calgary Beercore’s 10th anniversary party. Details were not announced by press time, but make sure to go out and thank the troupe for consistently supporting kick ass music in Calgary for a full decade.

Why in such a small metal community would bands fight each other on the same night? What is the point? If I knew there was a cool metal show @ Verns on Friday night I would’t have brought in a tour (ANVIL) at the same time across the alley @ The Distillery. I would expect others in the scene to do the same and for us not to directly compete. Just sayin’.
