Fall is here. Outdoor patio screenings are being replaced with cozy movie night-ins with our fam-jam, our pals and lovers. The couch has become our best friend and so has Netflix. That doesn’t mean 24/7 couch-potato-ing should be allowed. Replace that night-in with a few night-outs as the month of November brings us a surprisingly full line-up of diverse film events to our city you won’t want to miss.

On November 5, CUFF (Calgary Underground Film Festival) presents a live stage reading of Kern County, a film noir script to be read by its locally-based writer AJ Demers. Audience members get to listen in, offer input or ask questions about the script. Reading starts at 6:30 p.m. Cost? Free!

From November 6-10, we have the GIRAF Animation Festival brought to us by Quickdraw Animation. Peter Burr and Mikey Please are the two international animators in attendance at this year’s festival, both with scheduled workshops.

The Marda Loop Justice Film Festival is one of my favourite film festivals for its controversial and eye-opening documentary subjects. Topics explored this year are our constant consumption of GMOs, assisted suicide, homelessness seen through the eyes of the homeless and the ever-growing egg donor industry and its little known injustices and consequences. The festival runs November 13-17 and is entirely free.

November 15-17 sees the second edition of the Calgary European Film Festival. Bulgarian, Romanian, Polish, French and Czech films will be screened at the Globe Cinema.

Finally, we get to celebrate the end of the month with CUFF’s impromptu CUFF Docs, a three-day documentary festival, which runs November 21-23. Fans of TV series, Breaking Bad, will definitely not want to miss out on the screening of Narco Cultura, a documentary with a raw look inside the Mexican “narco” culture centred around the ever-present violence and fear in Mexican cities like Juarez, a city affected significantly by the drug war. The violent reality will blow your mind.
