This month’s list features a number of movers, shakers, and risk-takers: those who champion a brave new concept, or those relentlessly mad for fresh sounds.
SKMB Presents: Some Kind of Music Party – MARCH 8th
Four years strong and showing no signs of slowing, the Some Kind of Music Blog has always committed to showcasing for their readership the best Western Canada has to offer, with an abandonment of genre restrictions and expressive content tying each tune to a personal tale. Having grown from features to guest mixes and merch, they hope to further the journey with the funds raised this evening, and should have no problem drawing a crowd to the stacked lineup of Abasi, BIKES, Howl Sound, WMNSTUDIES, Woodhead, Juan Ton & Kid Vibe (location currently TBA).
DJ RICHARD w/ MAX ULIS, STEPDAUGHTER, HEARTBEAT(S) & 8PRN – MARCH 22nd
DJ Richard’s label, White Material, makes “music for other people out there who work a job that sucks,” or so fellow co-founder Young Male told Resident Advisor when it was selected for RA’s Label of the Month in December of last year. Birthed from the belly of Providence, R.I.’s experimental/noise scene, White Material became an underground fable when its first three records (from Young Male, DJ Richard, and eventual labelmate Galcher Lustwerk) sold out instantly, becoming hot commodities within the lack of a digital release. Currently leading the pack in deep house, ghetto booty, and no bullshit bangin’ techno (so basically, everything), this night calls forth all forward-thinkers.
TRUCKERDISCO w/WOODHEAD, WAXWORK & TAFFI LOUIS – MARCH 22nd
A Vancouver institution that’s finally found a new permanent home, Truckerdisco (if you haven’t been before) is one of the most brazenly bangin’ events you could hope to attend. Focused on Italo-disco, nu-disco, and everything else -disco “from Giorgio Moroder to James Murphy” as per the flyer, resident DJs Waxwork and Taffi Louis welcome another Vancouver institution, Woodhead, to the lineup for their official launch at the Heaven’s Door Lounge (formerly Jupiter Lounge, off Davie).
TEKLIFE (DJs RASHAD & SPINN) w/TAAL MALA & KRUSHA – MARCH 28th
Call it juke, footwork, ghetto house; the creators remain the leaders to this day when speaking of DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn. Splicing R&B vocals into 808 patterns and cranking it at 160bpm, these two take the cake when it comes to bringing a beat into something more frenetic and dramatic, less obvious, more intent upon the space between the beats than the beats themselves. Save your energy – you’ll need it on this dance floor.
