PLACES PLEASE – MARCH 2014

Wednesday 05th, March 2014 / 12:42

YOUR MONTHLY THEATRE GUIDE

Gentlemen Hecklers present “King Kong Escapes”
The Gentlemen Hecklers
March 12, 9:00 p.m.
The Rio Theatre (1660 Broadway E)

What’s your favourite “so bad it’s good” movie? Do you have friends (or perhaps you are the friend) who can endlessly laugh, criticize, lambast, degrade, chide and at any movie? Do you like improv? The Gentlemen Hecklers turn movie-heckling to a professional level, combining live performance, film and comedy together as they heckle the best of the worst films you know and hate (love). From the makers of “The Critical Hit Show: A Live Dungeons and Dragons Comedy Experience”, these gentlemen will tear your laughter muscles open.

Underbelly
Jayson McDonald
March 18-30
The Cultch (1895 Venables St.)

Straight from London (the Ontario one), Jayson McDonald brings his Vancouver Fringe Festival’s “Critic’s Pick of the Fringe” award winning show back to Vancouver at the East Vancouver Cultural Centre this March. This 60-minute spoken-word performance and poetry spectacle looks into the mind of an artist emerging from the 1960s and draws inspiration from the Beat Generation of writers like William Burrough and Jack Kerouac, artistic innovators and who some might call literary rebels and bohemians. There are post-show audience talk-backs on March 19, 23 and 25.

This Stays in the Room
Horseshoes and Hand Grenades
March 19-30
Gallery Gachet (88 East Cordova St.)

Horseshoes and Hand Grenades Theatre’s upcoming production will combine live performance and visual art in a production that is gallery exhibit by day and theatre show by night. Based on true stories from the creative team themselves, HHGT will present their most bravest and intimate production to date in this unique performance space, centred around their mandate to “reveal the vulnerable heart”, exploring the nature of shame, human forgiveness and how stories can dramatically change over time.

AFTER by Martha Herrera-Lasso
Dream of Passion Productions and Excavation Theatre
March 25-29 and April 1-5
Havana Theatre (1212 Commercial Dr.)

Martha Herrera-Lasso’s original play delves into the post-coital conversations of young lovers and explores the dynamics of love and lust in the modern day. A 20-something and 30-something couple, all with their own individual struggles, navigate through the emotional, sexual and social quagmire that oozes over us at often our most vulnerable state of being. Men and women alike should find this show penetrating and releasing of the pent-up thoughts we are sometimes too clumsy to articulate.
