Readers, writers, artists and publishers of commercial and literary fiction will come together at When Words Collide to share information, learn and build Calgary’s literary community. GlobalFest 2014: OneWorld Festival and Trico Homes International Fireworks Festival

An end-of-summer favourite every year, GlobalFest 2014 features the OneWorld Festival during the day and the Trico Homes International Fireworks Festival at night. First, explore the pavilions, where Calgary’s cultural communities will showcase their heritage dress, cultural music, performances and interactive activities. Then stick around for the Trico Homes International Fireworks Festival, which will feature presentations from world-renowned pyromusical artists from Japan, Thailand, Vietnam and France, which was voted Best of 2013. Touted as the world’s leading obstacle event race series and voted Outside Magazine’s Best Obstacle Race in 2012, Spartan Race is a time event series designed for athletes of all levels, from beginning to hardcore warriors. Participants in the sprint-distance race in Calgary will run a 5+ kilometre run featuring over 15 obstacles, including mud runs and trail racing. Meet an Innovator: August
August 23

TELUS Spark’s “Meet an Innovator” series continues in August with Calgary-based multimedia artist Jeff de Boer. Combining cutting-edge technology with fine artistry and design, de Boer’s work puts an emphasis on metal, like suits of armour for cats and mice, sword-handled briefcases, and abstract works called exoforms. In addition to meeting de Boer and his team, participants will have the opportunity to build something out of metal themselves.
