CALGARY — It’s that time of the year again. You can see your breath in the air, layers become a necessity, and river beers under a feverish sun seem like a distant, far away dream. Yes, it’s getting cold, and with this newfound chill comes the inevitable hibernation period where you spend days indoors scrolling through Netflix, looking for a show to binge-watch. Perhaps you’re at a loss as to what shows you should indulge in. Well, BeatRoute is here to help. We asked some familiar local personalities to talk about what shows they like to gorge on – hopefully it gives you some ideas.

Name: Eric Svilpis

Best Known For: Bass player for Jenny/If I Look Strong; You Look Strong; Owner of Evius Studios
Binge Habits: “I’m a few episodes into season five of Star Trek: The Next Generation, which is quite possibly one of the greatest shows ever. I’ve also binge-watched BoJack Horseman within the span of two days and have since re-watched almost every single episode. I also watched the latest season of Trailer Park Boys in about the same amount of time.”

Name: Rob Gruszecki

Best Known For: Vocalist/guitarist for Ghost Factory; Punk Rock Sing-A-Long at The Ship & Anchor
Binge Habits:The X-Files. Mystery, suspense, horror, comedy, sci-fi and conspiracy are all displayed perfectly throughout the show’s run. Full of eclectic stories that covers all bases making it perfect to marathon because of its variety.”

Name: Kevin Lee

Best Known For: Writer/artist of Many-Coloured Serpents; Employee at Shelf Life Books
Binge Habits: “Truthfully, I spend a good deal of time searching desperately for something I actually want to watch. I do, however, find myself adding excellent show after excellent show to my list without any hope of finding the time to watch them; this is a form of binging in itself. The Killing, Rectify, Hannibal and The Walking Dead have all managed to seep into my ocular organs without any regard or consideration for my schedule.”

Name: Dan Crittenden

Best Known For: Co-programmer for The Fifth Reel; Projectionist at The Plaza Theatre
Binge Habits: “Recently I’ve just been getting into Dr. Who. It’s cheesy sci-fi but it’s fun, and there’s a whole lot of it to watch and it’s all on Netflix, which makes it easy to binge on.”

Name: Brendan Fraser

Best Known For: Vocalist/guitarist for Forest Tate; Host of The Royal We on CJSW
Binge Habits: “Ken Burns’ Baseball. This documentary is divided into ‘nine innings’, each chronologically exploring a significant era of the game. I’ve binged through this thing twice. At a running time of 18 hours it’s practically a full-time job. As much as it highlights triumphs, it doesn’t shy away from dark personalities or events. It reveals themes like class, labour, and race inequalities. I’m a super fan of baseball but even if you hate sports, it’s worth watching for the mentioned cultural themes.”
