Vegan_webCALGARY — Husband and wife team, Eahly and Nan, were contemplating leaving Vancouver for Thailand when they came across an empty kiosk at the Calgary Farmers’ Market while visiting the city in 2010.

Both were long-time vegetarians and saw an opportunity to open a business in the market that specialized in vegan, vegetarian and Thai.

Hearts Choices became a popular go-to stop for healthy-minded folks, so when they had another opportunity to open a restaurant in a vacant Subway shop just off Macleod Tr. S.W., they snapped it up.

The menu is simple, but the taste wonderfully complex. Sweet ginger tofu, satay skewers, spicy green beans, spicy bamboo basil stir fry are just a few of the items. Served with rice and a side salad for $9.75 (a combo with two items $13.50), the unbeatable price matches the quality.

The Thai Vegan Cafe’s decor is modest but impeccably clean, and while Nan isn’t professionally trained she certainly has the magic touch.

“All the cooking are my favourite dishes,” says Nan with a warm, proud smile. “I just do what I like. All of the things we have here, you can’t get anywhere else. That’s how it works.”

Stop by Vegan Thai Café at 9679 Macleod Tr. S.W.
