5 films to see at this year’s Calgary Underground Film Festival

CALGARY — The Calgary Underground Film Festival and its celebration of that delicious ride against the grain will be coming to the Globe Cinema April 13 to 19 and the line-up is tight.

The fest opens with the sci-fi mind trip Ex Machina, which will be followed by an after party at Sole Korea. April 13, 7 p.m.

This year also features a Cronenberg retrospective, which will centre on cinematographer Mark Irwin who will be in attendance for a Q&A following The Fly. Playing April 18 as part of a double feature with Videodrome, starting at 1:45 p.m. Part two of the retrospective April 19 includes The Brood at 7:30 p.m. and Scanners at 9:30 p.m.

The documentary I Am Thor, a film about heavy metal front man Jon Mikl Thor, will be supplemented by a performance by Thor himself at the Palomino. April 18, 9:30 p.m. Click here to read our interview with Thor.

Professional wrestler Jake the Snake will be in attendance with director Steve Yu for the screening of The Resurrection of Jake The Snake Roberts. April 18, 6:45 p.m.

The fest also boasts Entertainment, the study of failed ambition in the desert with Neil Hamburger. April 16, 9:45 p.m. and April 19, 9:15 p.m.

Among these, as well as a handful of documentaries and international premieres, the festival is introducing CUFFcade, a showcase of local Canadian video game designers by way of consoles produced by the show at venues to enable visitors to play the games between events. This year’s fest promises to be fun and challenging for the viewer, a small taste of the other side of the street.
