Geode & Biome – August 14th @ The Fox

Billed as an after party from The Grove stage at Shambhala, this night looks like it’ll bring a little bit of the festival vibe to the city, with two of U.K. dubstep’s current favourites booked as double headliners. Manchester’s Biome and London’s Geode are both known for their work with the Dubstep for Deep Heads label, which sums up pretty succinctly what you can expect from this night. Local support comes from Eradik, Dubconscious, and Turu Crew.

Anthony “Shake” Shakir – August 15th @ Vancouver Art Gallery

clubland anthony shake shakirIt was certainly a disappointment to hear that Vancouver’s much-loved and long-running New Forms Festival would not be taking place this year, but the team has announced plans to create several smaller events, and to bring Anthony “Shake” Shakir to Vancouver for the first time. It definitely makes the loss of a festival a little easier to swallow. One of techno’s true legends, Shakir was instrumental in helping to form the original Detroit Techno sound, and has worked steadily with the likes of Derrick May, Juan Atkins, and Carl Craig. He runs two labels, Frictional and Puzzlebox, and has had recent releases on Wild Oats, Morphine Records, and FIT. Accompanying Anthony “Shake” Shakir at  the Art Gallery will be a string of live performances by local artists RAMZi, Attitudes in Error, and Nicolas Sassoon.

Joy Orbison & Ben UFO – August 20th @ M.I.A.

clubland ben ufoIn one of the bigger bookings of the summer, M.I.A. along with the Positive Movement team bring two of modern electronic music’s most respected tastemakers together behind the same booth. As one of the founders of seminal U.K. label Hessle Audio, Ben UFO has fostered a worldwide reputation as one of the industry’s leading and most interesting selectors. It’s easy to see from any interview, mix, or other online output that this is a man who truly considers the craft and the history of the music he surrounds himself with. Joy Orbison is a name of similar stature, and another artist who is unafraid to do things his own way. His irregular releases (on HotFlush, Aus Music, and Nonplus Records to name a few) are often critically lauded, and he runs both the Hinge Finger and SunkLo record labels. There are no support slots for this show, just so that these two can play music for as long as possible!
