CALGARY — The first annual rendition of the Black Mourning Light Metal Festival will be unleashed upon the City of Champions on Saturday, October 31st. The black, death, and doom metal oriented line-up will feature performances by 12 Western Canadian bands, who will perform throughout the day, beginning at 1 p.m. and finishing beyond the witching hour.

Curated and organized by Dustin Ekman, the man behind the record label Funeral Rain and the webzine Crown of Viserys, the festival includes bands from Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Regina, and more.

“The overall mission statement would be simply ‘black metal and doom,’” begins Ekman. “As much as I love death metal, I feel it’s a genre that gets a ton of exposure locally, as well as thrash and punk and the like, but black metal and doom are my favourite genres, and very much under represented here in Edmonton.”

True to word, the majority of the bands performing fall within the parameters of the black metal, including Calgary acts like emerging trio Trær (whose August demo is grim, frost bitten, and appropriately under produced), Vile Insignia (hot off the release of their October 2nd album Bestial Invocation), and rapidly ascending post black metal act Numenorean. Edmonton’s blackened death metal act Körperlose Stimme and orthodox black metal act Idolatry will perform; the latter are headlining the gig. Appearing directly before the headliner are Winnipeg’s progressive act Noire (who merge the melody of Dissection with the meandering, varied style of Enslaved) and Regina’s blackened doom act Altars of Grief, who’ve received much love in these pages for their passionate, Woods of Ypres-esque multi genre assault.

Adds Ekman, “Since the festival is happening on Halloween, it should be pointed out that there will be drink specials and costume prizes, so dress up and come get doomed!”

Black Mourning Light Festival occurs on Saturday, October 31st at Rendezvous Pub in Edmonton. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased in advance from Rendezvous Pub or Blackbyrd, or online.
