CALGARY — Looking for a family-friendly — or not-so-family-friendly — Christmas story this month? Or maybe you’d rather get your mind off the holidays with an adventurous escape? No matter what you’re in the mood for, Calgary’s theatre companies are sure to deliver something you’ll enjoy this month. Here are the top picks for shows in December.

Legend Has It
Alberta Theatre Projects
Martha Cohen Theatre
November 24 – December 31

If you’re a fan of improvisational theatre, then Rebecca Northan is likely already on your radar. The award-winning actress, improviser, writer and director first debuted Legend Has It at the Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays in 2014, and it was such a hit that ATP has brought it back. And you can bet that the audiences who loved it then will come and see it again. Why? Because no two performances are alike, as actors pick an audience member at random to go on a quest to save the world!

Epiphany
Lunchbox Theatre
Lunchbox Theatre
November 30 – December 23

Longtime Breakfast Television host and all-around likeable Calgarian Dave Kelly is back at Lunchbox Theatre with the world premiere of his latest show. Amidst a season known for decorating trees, stuffing stockings and cuddling around a fireplace, a middle-aged man tries to salvage his family, his marriage and his dreams. Epiphany is a humourous show that looks at the search for life’s answers in a new way.

Atlantis
Calgary Young People’s Theatre and The Outpatient Collective
West Village Theatre
December 3-12

Following a mysterious storm, the only two survivors of a violent shipwreck — a prison warden and his prisoner — wash up on the shores of a mythical island. The two are sure they have discovered paradise… but little do they know the disasters that await them on the Island of Atlantis.

Naughty but Nice!
Forte Musical Theatre Guild
Lunchbox Theatre
December 8-20

Featuring audience favourites like “Elf on the Shelf” and “Brendan the Brown-Nosed Reindeer,” Naughty but Nice! is a seasonal favourite for those who like a little rum in their eggnog. In addition to the scenes you loved from last year, the 2015 edition will have new songs, sketches… and a few surprises!
