CALGARY — Sled Island (full disclosure: where I work during a portion of the year) have made it a tradition to challenge local talent during their off-season with their Rock Lotto show series. The premise is that local musicians sign up to participate and then are mixed up into brand new bands who have to write and rehearse material to play that very night.
For this Happy Holidays party, we caught grim and groovy act PLOW (members of SET, Free the Cynics, Lucid 44, Beddington Heights and The CJs), the happily anthemic Major Arcana (HexRay, The Ashley Hundred and The Heirlooms) and a few moments of Pant (Burro, Geist, The Plodes, The Sweets).
What makes Rock Lotto a good time isn’t finding a new favourite band — in fact, these bands exist for one night only — but more getting to witness something fresh, fun and maybe even a little uncomfortable. Everyone is a little on their toes but ready to roll with it at the same time. As Major Arcana put it at the end of their set “Fuck It, Oh Well!” It’s a kind of relaxed tension that perfectly reflects the holidays themselves.AB, Alberta, Palomino, Sled Island, Sled Island Rock Lotto
