Web Producer’s Note: BeatRoute.ca’s premiere stream for Shuyler Jansen’s The Long Shadow has now ended. The album will be released by Big White Cloud Records on January 22nd.
CALGARY — On his fourth solo album, The Long Shadow, Old Reliable co-founder Shuyler Jansen melds his disparate influences into a cohesive whole, treading unlikely common ground in the sounds of modern Americana, Kraftwerk synth, fuzz bomb psych-rock, and lush Pet Sounds arrangement and vocal harmony.
“I had most of these songs well mapped out out in my home studio, the basic tracks anyway,” Jansen says from his North Vancouver home. “Once we had the time to get together, we went out to the cabin in Wakaw, Saskatchewan, and started laying everything down. We finished everything up at JC/DC [Studios] once my family and I got moved out to Vancouver.”
Jansen, together with Ryan Boldt, Kacy & Clayton, and others, recently began an artists’ collective called Big White Cloud Records to self-release and promote their records.
“We’ve researched and outsourced each individual piece of the package to ensure the highest quality. The album jackets, inner sleeves, the vinyl itself, it all comes from different suppliers, and we put them together at home,” says Jansen of the group’s DIY efforts and attention to detail. Previous releases on Big White Cloud include Ryan Boldt’s Broadside Ballads, and Kacy & Clayton’s Strange Country, which was also produced by Jansen.
Backed by a supporting ensemble including members of Destroyer, The Deep Dark Woods, Old Reliable, and Saskatchewan folk duo Kacy & Clayton, Shuyler Jansen’s The Long Shadow is an excellent addition to the catalogue of one of Western Canada’s most respected songwriters.
