VANCOUVER — Strathcona is well on its way to becoming the new place to be seen owning property if you are one of the hip in Vancouver. The mixture of old and new has brought a vibrant identity to this established community. Enter Strathcona Beer Company: one of the most anticipated brewery openings of this year. Built from a collaboration of six uniquely skilled partners, they’ve contributed to not only the community, but also the flourishing craft beer scene in Vancouver.
When sitting down with partner and brand visionary Adrian “Age” McInnes, it’s obvious the team has deep ties to this area. McInnes is naturally drawn to the community, having co-owned a printing business here (literally around the corner from SBC) for a decade. His Partner Tim Knight lived in Strathcona for a long time and always dreamed he’d return one day. “He loved the neighbourhood, lived in the neighbourhood for eight or nine years,” McInnes says. “He said if he can’t live there, he wants to invest in a business there in some capacity. Him being in Strathcona for all those years, he knew there were certain things that were missing in this neighborhood. If you want to go have dinner or a beer, you get in your car or you walk to Chinatown, Commercial Drive, Gastown.”
So invest Knight did. SBC is housed in a boxy 12,000 square-foot building on the corner of East Hastings and Campbell. Distinguished on the exterior by a bright red neon sign , the brewery boasts a beautiful space with countless light bulbs adorning white planks on the ceiling, lots of greenery, and long sharing tables. They serve pizza and salad, alongside their lineup of house beer, crafted by brewmaster Michael Nazarec. While SBC has around ten on tap right now, McInnes says they’re going to focus on their main four through the winter. Beside a growler-filling zone there’s a merchandise corner with all of the branded pieces McInnes personally designed, including shirts, hats, and skateboard decks. Flight paddles are, too, inspired by old skate decks from the 1970s.
When your business reflects the heart of a community, there’s no way you can lose. And SBC is a central hub for all Strathconians. Head down and grab a pint and a slice, seven days a week.
