VANCOUVER — Debra-Jean Creelman’s new EP marks the fourth and final instalment from Light Organ Records’ Railtown Sessions series. The anthology has shone light on a selection of Vancouver’s singer/songwriters who have been integral to the artistic fabric of the city for years. Creelman’s contributions have been extensive from being one of the founding members of the band Mother Mother, to her celebrated solo release in 2008, she has consistently been sought out as a vocal collaborator. “I think I just really enjoy harmonizing. For me, there’s no better feeling than when you find that sweet spot where the voices blend perfectly and all of a sudden singing feels effortless,” shares Creelman. The songs she selected for the Railtown Sessions EP had all been sitting on the back burner for five to ten years, with “In The Dark” being the second song she ever wrote. She also chose to record “Maybe They Were Right,” a song written by friend and fellow Vancouver musician Malcolm Biddle, who originally referred Creelman to the Railtown Sessions project.
Admittedly sharing “herself” in these four recordings, Creelman’s gritty, soul-churning ability strikes the perfect balance between soft and hard edges, mirroring the struggles we all face that are not easily pigeonholed into one neat feeling. “I want to make honest and original music that is unfettered by thoughts of whether it will be received well,” says Creelman. “I’m working on trying to get the ego out of the way, so what comes out is pure, before I get a chance to analyze it or judge it.” This internal challenge is evidently achieved in this release that is simultaneously jarring while it is comforting.
Debra-Jean Creelman’s exclusive live performance for the EP release is happening at Light Organ Records studio on November 11, 2016 which will be live streamed at www.lightorganrecords.com and air later on Roundhouse Radio.
Creelman will also join her fellow Railtown Sessions artists Sarah Jane Scouten, Rob Butterfield and Johnny 99 for a finale show of the project on December 9 at the Fox Cabaret.BC, British Columbia, Debra-Jean Creelman, Light Organ Records, The Railtown Sessions
