VANCOUVER — There is plenty to do in Vancouver during the Christmas season, but none will be quite as inspiring as Enchant — a 55,000-square foot light maze (the world’s largest) that will illuminate the heart of the city. It combines all of the best parts of the season: a family friendly atmosphere, artisanal gifts, rich food, and storytelling with flourish.
The Enchant journey begins with an original story written by Leanne Johnston. The Adventures of Enchant: The Great Search, illustrated by Sebastian S.C., is visually pleasing, and tied directly to the experience.
“We wanted to make the maze an interactive experience, so I wrote a children’s Christmas story that helped give a theme to the maze,” explains Johnston. “If you go online, you can actually read the first few pages of the story that tells about a terrible storm that hits the North Pole, not long before Christmas. All of the reindeer get lost during the storm and end up lost in the light maze.”
“When you get to the front of the line, you will be given your letter from Santa asking you to help find his missing reindeer,” she continues. “Scattered throughout the maze are nine reindeer. By making your way through the maze and finding all nine reindeer, you will be able to see all the different features of the maze.”
The hunt for reindeer is charming for children and the different features are a great photo opportunity. Tag yourself with the hashtag #enchantvan at the tunnels, caves, crystals, stars, or the maze’s most impressive highlight: a 64-foot tall Christmas tree covered in over 85,000 LED lights.
This is Enchant’s first year in Vancouver, but reception has already been overwhelming, with the maze being featured in blogs and on social media as one of the top spots to visit during the holidays, as the experience also includes provisions and the Enchant Christmas Market.
Says Johnston: “We have a great line-up of food trucks and vendors offering a wide range of food, so there will be something for everyone! There are a few that will be at Enchant for the whole duration, and few that will just be there for certain weeks, so it keeps it fresh and interesting. Our market is the same way — some artists and designers will be there for all five weeks, and others just for one or two, so the market will be unique from week to week.”
If you’re looking for a date idea, a unique gift, or a new family tradition, Enchant is sure to put Christmas in a whole new light.
