Album premiere: Stevie Ross – Something In Wonderland

VANCOUVER — Channelling neo-soul vibes over live instrumentation, Stevie Ross’ new EP Something In Wonderland is a feel-good ride from beginning to end. Initially recorded almost five years ago in collaboration with local producer Aaron Hamblin a.k.a. Speechless, the seven-track project stands the test of time for Ross. “It’s crazy that I sat that long on it because at this point a lot of the stuff that I made five years ago I don’t like, except this EP. I feel like we can still move with it.”

Coming from a heavy background as a rapper who mostly talked about drugs and gang affiliation, Ross explores a different side of himself as an artist with the new record. “I just wanted to connect with more people and make something that my family and my mom and everyone that I know could listen to,” he explains. “That’s why I don’t really swear on it.”

Balancing out his deep soulful voice with bright horns in “I’m Here” and wavy guitars in “Fallin’” Ross plans to continue on this path exploring a heavier, bluesier sound. “That’s why I came up with the name Something In Wonderland because it’s not supposed to be just about me,” he shares. “We’re gonna keep rolling with this vibe.”

Something In Wonderland is available on Apple Music January 6th.
