Sled Island announces Flying Lotus as 2017 guest curator

Flying Lotus will bring his unique flavours of EDM and alt-hip hop to Sled Island this year as the festival’s guest curator.

CALGARY — Sled Island announced today that Flying Lotus will join them as the festival’s guest curator for 2017.

The music and arts festival, now its 11th year, features over 250+ acts across music, film, art, comedy and more each June in Calgary, with its guest curator selecting about 10 acts from their personal network and interests. Past guest curators include Peaches (2016), Godspeed You! Black Emperor (2015), Kathleen Hanna (2014), among others.

Flying Lotus is the nom de plume of Steve Ellison, a producer, composer, DJ, rapper, filmmaker and label boss (Brainfeeder) signed to the prestigious Warp Records. Over the course of his career, Ellison has collaborated with names like Kendrick Lamar, Erykah Badu, Thundercat, Tim & Eric, the Adult Swim television network and… himself, as rapper alter ego Captain Murphy. Critics have cited his albums as some of the best of the past decade. He’ll be debuting his first film at this month’s Sundance Film Festival.

While no curatorial choices have been unveiled yet, fans of Ellison’s bass-heavy, jazz-laden, ruthlessly experimental style are expecting things to get seriously weird.

This year’s Sled Island Music & Arts Festival happens June 21-25 throughout Calgary.
