Song and Surf in Port Renfrew

PORT RENFREW, BC – There’s nothing like driving two hours through pouring rain to arrive in Port Renfrew just in time for the clouds to clear. You settle down in your rental-house-turned-hostel, crack a cold beverage and anticipate the weekend of music and good vibes ahead. Attending Song and Surf feels like a house party thrown by your closest friends, except the whole town is in on the party and no one is going to call the cops.

You may not know everyone when you roll up, but by the time you leave, you’re bound to have crossed paths on the dance floor or rubbed elbows in the oceanside hot tub at least a few times. This is probably the most intimate setting to see B.C. bands of all shapes and sizes play, if you can manage to drag yourself away from the beach.

More than a few tears were shed when Luca Fogale played a soulful sunset set on to the packed pews of the Port Renfrew church. His soft-spoken nature was perfectly matched to the beauty of the venue and he managed to completely captivate a crowd that came in rowdy but left on their Sunday best behaviour.

Croatia was one of the bands I was most looking forward to finally seeing and their dark synth-pop was especially entertaining thanks to energetic vocalist, Tashiina Buswa. Seeing her writhe around on her back while still belting out killer vocals was nothing short of impressive.

JPNSGRLS were easily the crowd favourite. Lead singer and resident drama-queen Charlie Kerr never fails to get the crowd going. It’s easy to see why this band has such a cult-like following. Kerr has a different facial expression for every lyric.

Finally, island favourite, Neon Steve played a never ending closing set full of bangers that kept the dance floor packed until they kicked everyone out. Song and Surf is a special place for an intimate live music festival experience and if you’re looking for more this summer, you will definitely be able to catch some of that magic at Tall Tree Festival on Browns Mountain, June 23 to 26.
