Aviary Fundraiser Shebang: Long awaited DIY venue needs a few more bucks to get rolling

Handy brothers Phil and Mark Muz have given everything to open their venue

EDMONTON – Logistically, the creation of a live music venue in Edmonton is one big hoop to jump through. Nobody knows this better than Philip Muz of the Aviary. While BeatRoute’s afternoon chat in the sun with Muz touched on several of these hoops specifically, we ultimately decided to save those juicy bits of information for another interview.

At the time of this interview, Muz and brother Mark were getting down and dirty with duties like trenching, getting bathroom renovations going and enlisting the help of local musicians with jack hammer detail.

“In the next few weeks we’ll still be pounding away on renovations and beginning some framing, which is a lot of fun work,” smiled Muz. “We’ll be building the bar and adding some cool touches to that piece which are off the record for now, but we’re really excited about them!”

Despite all the hoop talk, Muz seemed optimistic going forward with one of the very last fundraisers for the Aviary. They’re hoping to raise the last $25,000 to complete renovations and open their doors to the public later this summer. Citing the Mercury Room and owner/operator Trevor Belsher as one of the biggest supporters of this venture, Muz decided it would be the perfect spot for the day long event.

In addition to the support of the Mercury Room, local artists have come together in droves to support this fundraiser; expect performances from nêhiyawak, Wares, Jay Gilday, Pyramid//Indigo, the Velveteins, Amy Van Keeken, Motorbike James and more! Silent auction items have been donated, gift cards are available for purchase as well as general donations.

“We’ve all ready poured every dollar we have into where we are now. We need it topped off one last time and we’re going back to the well for that. I want to make it very clear how invested we are in this project; I’m never going to do another fundraiser. After this, it’s all us.”

Support the Aviary Sunday, June 18 by heading to the Mercury Room! Doors are at 3pm with the first performance at 3:45. Donations of several different denominations can also be made by using the link provided. Good luck Phil & Mark!
