BeatRoute + Fossil Records presents Torn Up Karaoke on Tuesday, June 27.

CALGARY – June! Beautiful, blossoms falling, grass growing, leaves living, river chilling June! Arguably my favourite month of the year has arrived with Sled Island riding its wake, and a ton of other sunshine-filled events to keep us busy.

The month begins with Punk Rock Bowling’s Prom Edition on June 3, so dust off those tuxedos, gowns, and bowling shoes for a throwback, black-lighted, all-ages evening featuring the sounds of Slut Prophet, Forbidden Dimension, Trashed Ambulance and more at Paradise Lanes.

Most of Calgary comes out for Lilac Fest, and this year, Folk Fest, Big Rock Brewery and Local 510 are teaming up to bring a taste of the park to 4th Street with an actual garden party. We’re talking sod, tents, beer, and live music in the Local back lot courtesy of 36?, Sinzere, Crooked Spies, Deicha and the Voodoos and more! This event starts Sunday, June 4 at noon so swing by for an afternoon drink.

Rockin for $ brings us another great themed edition (after the smash success of last month’s Alanis Morissette evening) with the sounds of Green Day’s seminal Dookie (1994), as played by Calgary bands like Ghost Factory, Belle Armoury, The Ativans and more. Check out Broken City June 7 for this throwback.

Mikey’s Juke Joint has brought swinging tunes and laid back vibes to Calgary for a number of years, and now has a second location on 12th Ave and 8th Street with new jam nights, live music, and custom cocktails. Check out Mikey’s on 12th on Facebook to keep up to date, and head down on June 11 at noon for the first edition of Burlesque Brunch in the new location! With a tag line like: “Beer! Bacon! Boobs!” how could you go wrong?

Finally, each week PRLR brings sad songs and cheap drinks to the table with Torn up Tuesdays. Alonso Melgar (The Fifth Reel, We Are Not Ghosts, Fake Werewolves) spins a history of emo, shoegaze, pop punk and more, and with a five-dollar Old Fashioned from the bar, it’s the perfect night to ease into the week or drown your sorrows without breaking the bank.

On the last Tuesday of June, in collaboration with Fossil Records and BeatRoute, the cocktail bar PRLR Lounge (124 10 St NW) will host Torn Up Karaoke. The brand new monthly event takes place for the first time on Tuesday, June 27, and will be hosted by Alonso and myself. We’ll be blasting carefully curated emo hits for you to sing along to! Check out BeatRoute online for a Torn Up Tuesdays playlist to give you an idea of what the nights are like!
