VIDEO PREMIERE: Local Creature & Alien Boy – “All My Friends”

Tuesday 21st, November 2017 / 10:15
By Jordan Yeager

VANCOUVER – Local Creature & Alien Boy are not so much a band as they are a collaboration between friends who also happen to be artists. In the summer of 2016, three Vancouver musicians found themselves across the country in Montreal, seeking to play shows but instead holing away in a bunker to record what turned into The Viper Sessions. Now, the trio has been separated by time and space, but not by intention.

A group who describe themselves as “folk-rock from outer space” is hard to summarize: in “All My Friends,” dreamy guitar riffs highlight slow, sometimes surfy vocals, all underscored with a folk-country sentiment.

Filmed and directed by Shay Hayashi, the “All My Friends” video follows the course of Local Creature, Alien Boy, and Viper on their travels facing the world without each other. It reeks of nostalgia and loneliness – Viper sings karaoke to an empty club, while somewhere far away, Local Creature bowls at a birthday party that no one has shown up to. The feeling evoked is visceral, and the juxtaposition of solitude and celebration is emphasized by the video’s sepia tones and psychedelic editing.

With the project still out east in Montreal, there aren’t any Vancouver shows on the horizon but until they find their way back home we’ve got their homage to friendship to scale back the distance between.
