VANCOUVER – Cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, etc.) has seen a peak in public interest in the last few years and the end of 2017 was no different. Making massive waves in its first month, CryptoKitties has not only helped create conversation surrounding the future of how currency is exchanged, but has also been congesting the Ethereum network with its over stimulation of the blockchain (blockchain empowers transparency, privacy, and security)
But wait, what are CryptoKitties?
“CryptoKitties are breedable collectibles that are built on blockchain technology — the same breakthrough that makes things like Bitcoin and Ethereum possible,” explains co-founder Bryce Bladon. “Bitcoin and ether are cryptocurrencies, but CryptoKitties are crypto-collectibles. Each CryptoKitty has a unique, 256-bit genome that defines its appearance and recessive traits. Unlike traditional collectibles, you can breed two CryptoKitties together to create a brand-new offspring that is a direct result of its parent’s unique genetic code,” Bladon continues. While most transactions sit around the $110 mark, these collectibles have been seen sold at $110,707.16 USD at time of sale, translating to 253.3368 ether, which has since increased in value. This craze, as some might see it, has created a stir that nobody was anticipating and a common interest that those behind it hoped for. Created by about a dozen tech savvy collective of forward/outside the box thinkers at venture studio Axiom Zen, CryptoKitties is a product described as colourful, cute, and fun while also serving as an introduction to blockchain technology, educating users and leaving them with a basic understanding of how distributed technology works.
“We believe that mainstream adoption is a crucial next step for distributed ledger technology,” tells Bladon. “CryptoKitties is our first attempt to do so. Whereas a lot of other projects in this space are aimed squarely at tech insiders and investors, CryptoKitties leverages accessibility, appealing aesthetics, and a genuine sense of delight to introduce and educate users.”
Barely having time to stop and think and take in any of the excitement, the team finds themselves steadily working on new features, improving the UI, new character traits, and numerous updates. “We’re exploring a lot of unique ways we can add utility to each CryptoKitty a user owns – we’ll have something to announce regarding these updates soon,” Bladon adds.
This is just the first public blockchain project from Axiom Zen. There are a lot of interesting new projects that Bladon was unable to go into depth about now, but they have the potential to reshape entire industries. “Axiom Zen is a diverse group of founders, designers, developers, and various other disciplines. Everyone on this team contributed to this project’s success; there’s no lone genius or fearless leader who can claim ownership of our success. We work together, we support each other, and we empower the best of each other.”
