CALGARY – When the heat kicks up in Calgary, two things happen; Stampedin’ and stellar punk-rock shows! This July isn’t any different, because Teenage Bottlerocket is coming to Alberta.
Formed back in 2000 in Laramie, Wyoming, Teenage Bottlerocket has gone through their share of up-and-downs, line-up changes and tragedies. But throughout the turmoil, the pop-punk quartet has endeavoured and released over a half-dozen albums. This year, TBR are celebrating the ten-year anniversary of their third album, Warning Device; and while there are other releases to consider, those may have to wait; including their debut album, Another Way, which turns 15 this year.
“We just repressed Warning Device on vinyl for the anniversary. It came out on a special Record Store Day colour and we did another round of black wax as well. But, no current plans for Another Way, that might have to wait for another anniversary,” the band explains.
It’s been three years since their last original recording Tales From Wyoming hit the stands, but in the meantime the clever note-benders opted to release a tribute album, Stealing the Covers (Fat Wreck Chords). Dropped in September 2017, the album featured the foursome doing skate-or-die versions of other artist’s songs ‘Bottlerocket-style.’
“We just haven’t finished writing the new album yet. We had the Stealing the Covers idea many years ago and it seemed like a good way to break Darren [Chewka, drummer since 2015] into the band as well as release some material. But, we’ve been writing a lot and we will put out a new record reasonably soon. We’ve been talking with Fat already, and they’re stoked. It’s just on us to finish writing the record.”
Easily enough said, but with so many awesome distractions it’s hard to zero-in on a single goal.
“We stay pretty busy. Miguel [Chen, bassist] has a book out called, I Wanna Be Well, through Wisdom Publications. Ray Rocket [guitarist Ray Carlisle’s solo act], Lillingtons [Kody Templeman’s other band] and Old Wives [Darren Chewka’s side-project] all have various shows coming up as well.”
Focusing on the present and more importantly their upcoming Alberta shows, the band is definitely savouring every moment in the sun. It’s safe to say that TBR has summer BBQ and PBR on the brain.
