In 2016, amid routinely exhausting album rollouts, Kanye West and Kid Cudi teased a forthcoming collaborative effort, Kids See Ghosts, with an Instagram post of them in Japan. They both received psychiatric treatment later that year. As the third — and most substantial — album in a campaign that has pushed G.O.O.D. Music to the point of ubiquity, Kids See Ghosts feels like a proper point of catharsis for a tortured duo whose careers have run parallel along long-gestating lines of turmoil. On “Reborn,” the unquestionable centerpiece, Kanye rhymes, “I was off the chain, I was often drained/I was off the meds, I was called insane,” while Cudi hums like a man who’s slain his demons. KSG doesn’t forge new ground so much as it returns its authors to their comfort zones — each other. There, they found peace. And in doing so, they forged a stirring, sublime record.
