by Yasmine Shemesh In Hebrew, chutzpah means “brazen audacity.” As such, it’s fitting that the term would be the namesake…

CALGARY – I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, or rather I AM saying it again, right now, but I love October. Call me basic, call me whatever you want, but fall colours, cooler, yet not sub-zero temperatures, spooky movies, costumes —  it’s all great! And you know what else? Pumpkin tastes fucking good. Get over yourselves. I like it in beer, I like it in coffee, I like it in cheesecake form. I also like how many amazing shows there are. Trick or treat!

I had the chance to interview Foreign Beggars and see them live during last year’s Alberta Electronic Music and it made a lasting impression. Catch this live UK grime behemoth on October 5 at The HiFi.

Former meme-lord and rowdy bass maker Getter will be mashing up The Palace Theatre on October 6 — stop by and say suh!

Also on the 6, but over at the Marquee, check out UK breaks legends Stanton Warriors, presented by Break Beat Dojo, Electrodeo and FozzyFest.

After taking a short sabbatical, Noctilux Collective are returning in full force to the venue that gave them their start The Habitat on October 7. The evening’s selections will be provided by Openend, Sanctuary, SMBR, SENSR, Illfitted, and KR Dub.

Prolific and truly unique hip-hop star Oddisee and Evidence, of Dilated Peoples fame take the stage at Commonwealth on October 11 on their Odd Weather Tour.

On October 15 at Commonwealth catch Fatlip, a founding former member of legendary ‘90s  hip-hop group The Pharcyde.

The good folks of New Wave forge onwards with their HiFi residency with Vancouver’s fiery duo Greazus on October 18. These dudes have been making serious tunes that have caught they eyes and ears of an international audience and elevated them to a huge platform. Without a doubt they are one of my favourite Canadian acts in the genre of jungle/drum and bass right now.

One of the purveyors of the “G-House” sound — booming basslines and hip hop samples at a housee tempo — French producer Shiba San will grace the stage of the Commonwealth on October 18.

Get your fill of that real Chicago house sound on October 19 at Habitat courtesy of Lee Foss.

Taiki Nulight is one of the baddest producers in the bassline house game. Check out his jacking, relentless style at Local 522 on October 20.

Sub Chakra and Alto Function are wasting no time getting into the Halloween spirit and I like it. On October 20, they present “a spooky occasion” entitled Malice featuring one of the United States best contributions to dubstep The Widdler. He is currently travelling around North America on his Back To Basics Tour and the Calgary show at The Royal Canadian Legion #1 — the first show for Sub Chakra there — will feature California’s Pushloop and Victoria, B.C.’s ColtCuts

I have some distorted and wild memories (flashbacks) from HiFi’s Halloween bash two years ago, and this year once again they have brought back Bass Coast queen The Librarian to headline. Might just have to come in on October 27 and see this one again and relive the experience, it was a doozie. Spock, if you’re reading this, you are a strange lingering man. Local superstars OAKK and Jah Raven on opening duties.

As always the hardworking promoters around town have done a bang-up job with the October programming. Looking forward to seeing post-show costume pictures, get creative people!
