Haunted when the minutes drag? BeatRoute’s got the good dirt.

CALGARY – While it would be hard to top the quantity of shows in September, October, arguably the most Metal month of all, is shaping up to be excellent as well.

The month kicks off with a progressive flair as QUIETUS, CAVEAT, ILLUMINATED MINERVA and OCEANA TERROR lay claim to the stage at Dickens Pub on the 5th. Why not spend Saturday night the 6th, with APRENTICE, SYRYN, VOLITION and THE UNDEADBEATS Vern’s? Then, round out your loud weekend with the psychedelic stylings of EARTHLESS at the Palomino on Sunday.

No time to catch your breath as Monday, October 8th sees modern metal titans MACHINE HEAD rampage through town on their North American tour.
Fans of Western Canadian power metal will have cause to rejoice as UNLEASH THE ARCHERS, STRIKER, ORDER OF CHAOS and W.M.D. occupy Dickens Pub on October 12th. But, if you prefer doom and gloom to life-affirming power metal check out MURK’s stormy EP cassette release with TEKKARA, SAWLKUNG and DREAR at the Palomino.

Rockers old and young can sing along to the familiar sounds of Queen when tribute act, QUEEN EXTRAVAGANZA perform at the Grey Eagle Casino on Oct 18th. October 19th sees SHARK INFESTED DAUGHTERS, LIVING MACHINES, HAMMERDRONE and CHASE THE GREY entertaining the masses at Broken City (but you can catch them in Edmonton on the 18th first if you’re keen).

A very October affair, the annual Black Light Mourning Festival is billed as a three-day/two-city event spanning from Calgary and Edmonton. In full force October 19th through 21st the festival will see many extreme metal bands let their hair down. Hosted by Vern’s in Calgary and The Rendezvous Pub in Edmonton, the twin terror line-up features the likes of PECADO, CELL, CROWN OF VISERYS, VILE INSIGNIA, TEKKARA and ALTARS OF GRIEF.

On the “mellower” side of the scale, the gremlin-smackin’ FOO FIGHTERS are set to rock The Saddledome on the 23rd. Meanwhile, for the first time in over two decades, Ontario’s melodic-hardcore darlings BRIGHTON ROCK will bring their old school antics to the Grey Eagle Casino on the 25th.

Speaking of old school, 20-year vets and metalcore heroes, TRIVIUM will be at The Palace on Friday, October 26th. But save some energy, the following night alternative rockers STONE TEMPLE PILOTS and SEETHER are crashing the Grey Eagle Casino.

It’s tricks and treats all ‘round, but if your tastes are more attuned to local talent for that weekend check out RIOT CITY, DENIMACHINE and FUBAR’s own NIGHTSEEKER breaking it all down at Broken City on the 26th.

Your Halloween insanity continues as Vern’s rolls out the black carpet for THRASHOWEEN MADNESS with on the 27th.

Hold that thought, pumpkin! On Halloween itself, put on your best costume and slither on down to The Greedy Pig for Heavy Metal Halloween with ROADRASH and MOTLEY CUVERS. If you’ve got the guts for it, that is.
