Sled Island 2019 Announces First Wave Lineup

CALGARY — Breaking the winter ice and stoking the flames of desire, Sled Island has rolled out the first wave lineup of artists who will be featured at the upcoming festival that runs June 19 to 23, 2019 in a variety of venues around Calgary’s core.

With each annual installment the eclectic indie arts entity chooses a noteworthy musical innovator to add their own special touches to the tone and texture of the festival’s programming. This year’s guest curator, Julien Baker, is a modern balladeer and guitarist whose multi-instrumental constructs and philosophical lyrics shine a light on the darkest corners of the mind and the heart. The youngest guest curator in Sled Island’s twelve-year history, Baker had a clear vision in tapping a thoughtful and diverse selection of fellow storytellers, poets and provocateurs to join her on the summer festival’s roster. Baker’s dozen includes the likes of Philadelphia crooner Michelle Zauner who will enthrall audiences as space-pop princess Japanese Breakfast, while hip hop concussion grenade JPEGMAFIA will level the playing field along with Brooklyn’s riot boi Le1f.

Rock is still very much on the menu as revealed with the announcement that ‘90s alt-rocker Alicia Bognanno will be appearing with her Nashville-jaded troupe Bully. Prepare to rocket into hyper-space with legendary psych surfers Man or Astro-Man? and deconstruct reality with The Messthetics (Fugazi’s Joe Lally and Brendan Canty combined with jazz guitarchitect Anthony Pirog) who deal the most thrilling avant-groove on the market. Presented via an orgasmically organic poster by artist Josh Holinaty, the initial offerings are a promising and palate-pleasing appetizer that represents about a quarter of what the Sled Island festival of art, music, film, comedy and more will ultimately have on offer come June. A most welcome reminder that the days of wine, roses and coatless revelry are just four short months away.
