All Garrett Kato needs to survive is his guitar and his voice. After quitting his day job in 2010, Kato moved from Canada to Byron Bay, Australia with nothing guiding him but a love for music and a backpack full of clothes. The singer-songwriter got his start by busking on street corners, where some of Australia’s most renowned artists took notice of him. Soon enough, he was making a living by performing several shows per week and running a recording studio of his own.
Kato’s pop-folk style is punctuated by simplicity. It has all the trappings of classic folk – wistful, longing vocals accompanied by melodic guitar chords. His new video for single “Rivermouth” serves as a sort of self-introduction.
“[It’s about] acceptance for the people around you and the changes in life,” says Kato about the track. “It’s all about finding beauty in the struggle and success in the long journey.”
If you don’t know him yet, you soon will. In March, he will embark on a European tour with folk-rock duo Jon and Roy, hitting cities like London, Amsterdam, Berlin and Vienna.
Look out for Kato’s debut EP Distant Land, which is due out this spring.
