Celebrating its fifth year as Calgary’s only feminist arts festival, Femme Wave announced today that they will be back on the frontlines November 7 to 10 with their biggest and best lineup yet.
Holding their ground as the go-to experience for discovering some of the greatest and most diverse female and non-binary artists impacting the community, Femme Wave’s 2019 programming offers plenty for all with acts including Canadian garage-punk duo The Pack A.D., recently reunited scene queens the Shematomas, Calgary’s rising electronic dream pop star Selci. They will also be welcoming the hard-hitting bars of hip-hop artists Haviah Mighty, Hua Li, and Kimmortal.
“Femme Wave’s support and advocacy for women and non-binary artists is more relevant than ever,” says Kaely Cormack, Femme Wave executive director and festival co-founder. “Over the past five years, we contributed to improving inclusion and safety in our arts community. Now, with politics shifting and media highlighting issues related to gender identity, we feel the growing momentum and the ongoing need for Femme Wave to exist.”
Established in 2015, Femme Wave has built a reputation on showcasing empowering musicians, including a range of programming from film, comedy, visual arts, and the more recently added spoken word. The festival continues to evolve, highlighting categories from the arts that long for more exposure, while providing a platform for women and non-binary artists to share their art in an inclusive, safe space and will continue to do so at events like their all day, all ages show crawl.
All shows will be taking place at various venues throughout Calgary’s vibrant inner-city core. Each year festivalgoers walk away with an enlightened and informed view due to the festival’s collaborative and interdisciplinary approach.
Whether it’s through the Femme Wave Bizarre plant and clothing swap, an artist talk by electronic chill-wave act StegoSarahs, drag and burlesque shows, or workshops that teach about zine making and astrology, Femme Wave covers all of the bases, bringing out the unconventional from all corners of the local arts scene.
